Well it started last night. The Circus that is the Democratic Convention. If day one is any forecast for the rest of the show they can put it on DVD and sell it as a sleep aid.
In my opinion they missed the chance to begin laying out what Barack Obama stands for and how he wants to get there. Not the Hope and Change pablum he has been feeding us but the main course, the meat and potatoes. That is of course if there are meat and potatoes!
Sure Ted Kennedy gave a rousing speech about the past and how Obama will bring hope and change, yadda yadda yadda. Basic campaign speech Ted always gives. Sure it ment more as this will probably his last convention but there was nothing new. No discussion of specific programs, just the usual littany of Health care, jobs, economy education and of course the war in Iraq.
We heard nothing last night of what specifically Obama plans to do about anything.
Michelle Obama was supposed to be the highlight of last night's program. She was charming, she looked good, in fact to plagiarise - I mean, borrow from their Vice Presidential Nominee, she was clean, inteligent and articulate!. Not my words folks, Joe Biden's, remember? She did what they told her to do. Be softer, be a mom, a wife, a daughter who loved her Daddy. She did all that and did it well. She spoke lovingly of her husband, But where was the beef? Another speech, another lost opportunity to lay out another Obama proposal. I am a political junkie. I live for this stuff. They lost me last night Sure I am not voting for him any way, but most people are not political junkies. If you loose people like me from boredom, how many "normal" viewers did they loose and will they tune again later in the week?
I understand that in a four day convention you build up to the nominee's acceptance speech, but each day is an opportunity to get part of your message out. spending the first day with Nancy Pelosi babeling, and Ted Kennedy giving his Last Hoo Rah for Camelot and Michelle telling us they are a normal American family is not news. It is not info that tells anyone anything about How Barack Obama will deal with the complex and dangerous world he wants to lead. I hope the McCain campaign and the RNC are taking copious notes. Don't do what they are doing.
If the pace does not pick up and the ratings this week are low, McCain has a great opportunity to follow the Dem convention with a great VP pick that deflates any bounce Obama may get. Follow the VP pick with the Republican convention next week and the Big MO stays with McCain.
This could still end up being a great convention for the Obama Biden ticket. But tonight is Hillary night, a reminder of what was in the 90's and what could have been. Not an Obama night. Sure she will do like Michelle and do what she is supposed to do and say it very well but the talk will be about HER not Obama no matter what she says. Tomorrow it is Bill Clinton...another reminder of the past. Where is the hope and change? follow Bill with another blast from the past going back 36 years in the Senate, Joe, I am not a plagiarist, Biden, and that doesn't leave much convention for the candidate! So much for chsnge..YAWN!!!
Obama's negotiotions with the Clintons does not bode well for his abilities to negotiate with enemies like Russia, Chins, North Korea, Iran, etc. Obama gave away the store at his own convention! This was a no brainer. It is HIS week and he has devided it up so badly there is not much left for him. He can not be allowed to do the same with our future!
